See both paths honestly

"Should I stay or should I go?" is one of the hardest questions you can bring to tarot — because the honest answer rarely feels as clean as we wish it would. This six-card spread does not answer it for you. It does something better: it lays both paths side by side so you can see them honestly against each other. Why stay, why go, how you will feel if you stay, how you will feel if you leave — and at the end an advice card that orders the picture. If you are at exactly such a point right now, this spread is your clearest mirror.

What this spread actually does

The stay-or-go spread builds the decision as what it actually is: a comparison between two future versions, not a verdict on the past. Card 1 shows the current state: where the relationship actually stands right now, beyond your narrative about it. Cards 2 and 3 sit opposite each other: reasons to stay, reasons to go. Cards 4 and 5 are the emotional test: how will you feel if you stay — not in a week, but in six months? And how will you feel if you leave, once the first pain and the first relief have passed? Card 6 is the advice — not a directive, but a perspective in which the other five cards together want to tell you something.

When this spread fits

The stay-or-go spread fits when:

  • you are in a relationship that has been shaky for months or years
  • you are weighing the relationship against a major life opportunity
  • you want to settle an on-off relationship for good
  • both paths look fine and you cannot tell which is more right
  • you are carrying an affair, distance, or a betrayal and do not know where it leaves you

How to actually read the six cards

Read the spread in three layers. First layer: only cards 2 and 3, "Why Stay" and "Why Go", side by side. Which card is clearer, which is stronger? A weak stay card next to a strong go card is an answer — but it is rarely that clean. Second layer: cards 4 and 5, "how I feel staying" and "how I feel leaving". This is the more important read. People often choose with their head to stay and with their body to leave — these two cards show where the gut sits, often ahead of the reasons. Third layer: card 6, the advice. It rarely says "stay" or "go". It tells you what the next move is, whichever you choose.

Where this spread belongs

Stay or go — frequently asked questions

Does the deck tell me what to do?
No. The spread lays both paths out honestly so you can decide. A deck that "releases" you from a decision only releases you from responsibility — not from the consequences.
What if the "how I feel staying" card is heavy?
Then you have important information: staying costs you on a layer you may not yet have admitted. Ask what you can place against that cost.
How often can I pull this spread?
At most once every four to six weeks for the same relationship. Otherwise you circle in your own monologue instead of actually seeing.
Does this spread work outside love relationships?
Yes. It also fits jobs, friendships, places to live — anywhere a real stay-or-go decision is on the table.
