What does Mercury retrograde actually mean?
Mercury never moves backward. Seen from Earth, our planet regularly overtakes faster-moving Mercury on the inside lane — and for about three weeks Mercury appears to run backward, the way a train out the window seems to slip back when a faster one passes it. Astronomically it is an optical illusion. Astrologically the period is read as an invitation to revisit Mercury's themes — talking, thinking, tech, travel — calmly, rather than charging blindly ahead.
Because Mercury orbits the Sun in just 88 days, this happens three to four times a year, for roughly three weeks each time. The dates are fixed years in advance — they follow purely from the orbits, which is why we compute them here with the Swiss Ephemeris engine instead of copying them.
The three stages of every phase
- Pre-shadow (about 2 weeks before) — Mercury already travels through the stretch of the zodiac it is about to re-cross backward. Themes that surface now often return during the retrograde.
- The retrograde itself (about 3 weeks) — from standstill ("station") to turnaround. The days right around the two stations are considered the most noticeable — plans stall, messages cross.
- Post-shadow (about 2 weeks after) — Mercury moves forward again and retraces the ground it covered. A good time to sort out what the retrograde clarified.
What the sign of the phase tells you
Each phase falls in a zodiac sign (listed with every phase at the top of this page). That sign's element colours the theme:
| Element | Signs | What it touches |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | drive, plans, snap decisions |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | money, work, contracts, routines |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | communication, tech, contacts |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | feelings, memories, old relationships |
How strongly you feel a phase depends on your own chart: it lands in one of your twelve houses — a concrete area of life.
