Your true animal?
Chinese New Year isn't on January 1st. That's why many people born in January or early February might have a different animal than they think. Find your true animal, element, and yin/yang.

Born in January? You might have the wrong Chinese zodiac animal. That's because the Chinese New Year isn't on January 1st. Imagine a school year that starts on a different date every single year. Your animal's year only begins on that specific day, which follows the moon. Your sign has three parts: an animal, an element, and yin or yang. Many find this describes the shared tone of their generation. See if it feels true. Find out your real animal for free at theastroacademy.com.
What is the Chinese zodiac?
The Chinese zodiac gives every year one of twelve animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. On top comes one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and a side: yin or yang. Animal and element together form a 60-year cycle. Only then does the same combination return.
Unlike your Western star sign, which changes every month, you share your Chinese animal with everyone born in the same lunar year. It describes the generation and the basic tone. It gets finer with the hour animal from your birth time. If you want to go deeper, read your birth chart alongside it.
Why the New Year matters
The Chinese year does not begin on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. It falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, in Beijing time — somewhere between 21 January and 20 February. Many tables online only use the calendar year. For anyone born in January or February, that can give the wrong animal.
- February 2026: The Year of the Fire Horse began on 17 Feb 2026. Someone born on 10 February 2026 is still a Wood Snake.
- February 1985: New Year came late, on 20 Feb 1985. Everyone born from 1 January to 19 February 1985 still belongs to the Year of the Wood Rat.
- Lichun: Four Pillars astrology (Ba Zi) counts differently: its year begins at the start of spring, Lichun, around 4 February. Our calculator tells you when that makes a difference for you.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water
You can tell the element from the last digit of the Chinese year: 4 and 5 Wood, 6 and 7 Fire, 8 and 9 Earth, 0 and 1 Metal, 2 and 3 Water. Even years are yang, odd years yin. The elements feed each other in a circle — Wood feeds Fire, Fire Earth, Earth Metal, Metal Water, Water Wood.
- Wood: Wood stands for growth, planning and new beginnings.
- Fire: Fire stands for warmth, enthusiasm and being seen.
- Earth: Earth stands for grounding, care and patience.
- Metal: Metal stands for clarity, resolve and clear boundaries.
- Water: Water stands for feeling, intuition and adapting.

More than the year animal
The year animal is only the first of four pillars. Chinese astrology also counts the month, the day and the hour of your birth, each pillar made of an element with yin or yang (the stem) and an animal (the branch). Together that makes eight characters, Ba Zi in Chinese. Tradition says the year shows how others see you, the month your parental home and environment, the day you yourself, the hour the side only close people know.
The element of the day is called the Day Master and is your core in this teaching: Yin Wood is the climbing plant, Yang Fire the sun, Yin Metal the jewellery. The other elements feed it, check it or are shaped by it. The calculator above shows you all four pillars under “Four pillars, four views”: overview, pillars, connections and patterns. Note that Four Pillars starts the year at the start of spring, Lichun, around 4 February, not at the lunar New Year. Anyone born in between has a different year animal in the two systems.
The four trines
In the circle of twelve animals, three at a time stand at equal distance from each other. Tradition calls them San He, the three harmonies. They are said to share a similar rhythm. The animal directly opposite counts as the counterpart — a lot of attraction, a lot of friction.

How long is a Chinese year?
Usually 354 days: that is the length of 84 of the 201 Chinese years between 1900 and 2100. Overall the range runs from 353 to 385 days. 74 years (36.8%) have a thirteenth month: twelve lunar months are eleven days shorter than a solar year, and the leap month catches up. That is why New Year moves between 21 Jan (1966) and 20 Feb (1985).
So if you were born in January or February, check the New Year date closely. It also shows up in real birth counts: of the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, the Year of the Monkey 2016 had the most births per day (2,171) and the Year of the Dragon 2024 the fewest (1,846).

| Year | Days | Births | per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 Horse | 384 | 753,030 | 1,961 |
| 2015 Goat | 354 | 721,251 | 2,037 |
| 2016 Monkey | 355 | 770,733 | 2,171 |
| 2017 Rooster | 384 | 826,334 | 2,152 |
| 2018 Dog | 354 | 761,612 | 2,151 |
| 2019 Pig | 354 | 756,308 | 2,136 |
| 2020 Rat | 384 | 811,982 | 2,115 |
| 2021 Ox | 354 | 765,497 | 2,162 |
| 2022 Tiger | 355 | 719,145 | 2,026 |
| 2023 Rabbit | 384 | 726,644 | 1,892 |
| 2024 Dragon | 354 | 653,509 | 1,846 |
New Year dates 1900–2100 computed with the Swiss Ephemeris using the full calendar rule (Beijing time). Births: Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), Statistischer Bericht Geburten 2025, table 12612-20 "live births by day", Germany 2014–2025, assigned day by day to the Chinese year. Not in the table: Snake, because no complete year of that animal falls inside the daily data.
Chinese zodiac FAQ
- What is my Chinese zodiac sign?
- It depends on your birth year — more precisely, on whether you were born before or after Chinese New Year. Enter your date of birth above to see your animal, element and yin or yang. The table above lists every year from 1924 to 2031 with its exact New Year date.
- Why does my animal depend on Chinese New Year?
- The Chinese calendar is lunisolar. Its year begins with the second new moon after the winter solstice, somewhere between 21 January and 20 February. So anyone born in January or early February often still belongs to the previous year’s animal. Example: someone born on 10 February 2026 is still a Wood Snake, because the Year of the Fire Horse only began on 17 February 2026.
- What does the element in my Chinese sign mean?
- Besides the twelve animals there are five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each element rules two years in a row, once yang, once yin. That makes a 60-year cycle before the same combination returns. The element colours the animal: tradition sees a Fire Rat as livelier than a Water Rat.
- What is an hour animal?
- The Chinese day has twelve double hours, each belonging to an animal. The Rat hour runs from 23:00 to 00:59, the Ox hour from 01:00 to 02:59 and so on. Tradition says the hour animal shows the inner side mostly known to people close to you. You need your birth time for it.
- What are the four pillars (Ba Zi)?
- The four pillars are the year, month, day and hour of your birth, each made of an element with yin or yang and an animal. The year animal is only the first of them. The element of the day is called the Day Master and counts as your core. The calculator shows you all four pillars, the connections between them (trine, secret friend, opposite) and patterns such as a missing element. The report “Your Four Pillars” reads them in eight chapters, with the twelve months ahead of you.
- Which Chinese signs go well together?
- Traditionally three animals form a trine (San He): Rat, Dragon and Monkey; Ox, Snake and Rooster; Tiger, Horse and Dog; Rabbit, Goat and Pig. Each animal also has a "secret friend" (Liu He) and an opposite in the circle (Liu Chong) with more friction. These are images to check, not a verdict on a relationship.
- Is the Chinese zodiac the same as my star sign?
- No. Your Western star sign depends on where the Sun stood on your birthday and changes every month. The Chinese animal depends on the year and is shared by everyone born in the same lunar year. The two systems describe different layers and read well side by side.
- Which animal is 2026 and 2027?
- 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, from 17 February 2026 to 5 February 2027. The Year of the Fire Goat then begins on 6 February 2027 and runs until 25 January 2028.
