The Rat in the Chinese zodiac
The Rat opens the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Tradition links it with alert eyes, quick sums and a nose for where an opening is right now. Whether that fits you is something you can check against your own week.

How the Rat spots a chance
Many people born in a Rat year describe a mind that keeps a running tally. The offer at the supermarket, the cheaper train an hour later, the colleague who is about to leave and whose project will need an owner. Tradition calls this resourcefulness: the Rat sees supplies where others see clutter. Perhaps you know the feeling of having noticed an opening while everyone else is still discussing the situation.
- Having split the restaurant bill in your head before it even arrives.
- Three tabs of price comparisons open, even though it is only a charging cable.
- Sensing at a family dinner that your uncle is holding something back, long before he says it.
- Always keeping a small reserve of money that nobody else knows about.

Why the Rat comes first
An old legend tells of the Great Race: the Jade Emperor wanted to name the years in the order in which the animals crossed a river. The Rat was a poor swimmer and asked the Ox to carry it on its back. Just before the bank it jumped off and reached the finish first. The story shows both sides people attribute to the Rat: cleverness, and a certain habit of using others to get where it wants to go.
Its fixed element is Water, its polarity Yang, the outward-facing, active side. The Rat rules the double hour from 23:00 to 00:59, the time when one day turns into the next. Check for yourself: are you especially clear-headed at night, when everyone else has gone to bed?
Where it rubs
Someone who is always counting sometimes counts people too. Tradition describes the Rat as someone who likes to secure closeness and dislikes standing there empty-handed. In daily life this can come across as suspicion: your friend tells you about a new job and your first question is about the salary. Often there is no coldness behind it, just a worry that there will not be enough in the end.
A second friction point: many ideas at once. The Rat likes to start five things and does not finish every one. It may be worth asking which of your open projects is truly yours right now.
Money, work and family
At work, people born in a Rat year are often described as the ones who first understand how a system works and then find a shortcut. They enjoy negotiating and can tell when an offer sounds too good. In the family this shows up as care through provisions: a full fridge when the children visit, a list with everyone's birthday. Check whether you tend to show affection by providing rather than with words.
Five kinds of Rat
Each element appears once in 60 years among the Rat years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.
| Element | Years | What tradition describes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Rat | 1924, 1984 | Wood Rats (1924, 1984) may pair resourcefulness with more patience and a taste for long-term plans. |
| Fire Rat | 1936, 1996 | Fire Rats (1936, 1996) often come across as more direct and daring, doing their sums out loud rather than quietly. |
| Earth Rat | 1948, 2008 | Earth Rats (1948, 2008) may play it safer, building reserves rather than taking new risks. |
| Metal Rat | 1960, 2020 | Metal Rats (1960, 2020) often hold clear standards and a sharp tongue when something is off. |
| Water Rat | 1972, 2032 | Water Rats (1972, 2032) carry their element twice, and tradition describes them as especially attuned to moods. |
Who goes with the Rat?
Tradition knows three kinds of relationship for the Rat. San He, the three animals that traditionally complement each other: Rat, Dragon and Monkey share a liking for quick decisions. Liu He, the secret friend, is the Ox, which brings the calm the Rat sometimes lacks. Liu Chong, the clash, is the Horse: two animals that both want freedom, but in very different ways. These are old patterns, not verdicts. Look at your own relationships and see whether you recognise the support or the friction.

How long is the Year of the Rat?
Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Rat begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1912, has 354 days, the longest, 2080, 384. 7 of the 17 Rat years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.
It starts at the earliest on 22 Jan 2080 and at the latest on 19 Feb 1996. Together, 8.49% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Rat, rank 1 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Metal Rat was 2020, next time 2080.
In the Year of the Rat 2020, from 25 Jan 2020 to 11 Feb 2021, 811,982 children were born in Germany, 2,115 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 6. With 384 days it was a leap year and had about a month more births for that reason alone.

- 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020 and 2032. The Chinese year begins at Chinese New Year in late January or February, so people born in January or early February often still belong to the previous animal, the Pig.
