The Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac
The Rabbit is the fourth animal of the cycle. Tradition links it with sensitivity, good taste and the art of softening a tense room. Whether you recognise yourself in that is something you can check against your last family gathering.

Born in January? Your Chinese animal sign might not be what you think. The Chinese New Year doesn't start on January 1st. It follows the Moon, so the date changes every year. People born in a Rabbit year are often natural go-betweens. They sense when a mood is about to turn. Maybe this sounds familiar: two friends fall out, and you are the one who calls both of them. This is an invitation to check this for yourself. Notice what you do in the next tense situation. Find out if you are a Rabbit for free at theastroacademy.com.
The Rabbit as go-between
Many people born in a Rabbit year notice sooner than others when the mood turns. A quick glance between your parents, one pause too many in the group, and you have already changed the subject. Tradition calls this diplomacy: the Rabbit looks for the path on which nobody loses face. Perhaps you know the role of the person who, when two friends fall out, ends up calling both of them.
- Reading a message twice before replying so it does not land the wrong way.
- Sensing at dinner who feels left out and drawing them back into the conversation.
- Arranging your home so that guests visibly relax as soon as they walk in.
When is the Year of the Rabbit?
The Year of the Rabbit returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 8 Feb 2035 as the Wood Rabbit.

Peace at any price
The shadow side of diplomacy is avoiding conflict. The Rabbit often says "it's fine" when it is not. A colleague presents your idea as their own in a meeting, and you only get annoyed on the way home. Often this is not a lack of opinion but a strong dislike of noise and harshness.
Check for yourself: how many unspoken sentences are you carrying around right now? Tradition describes the Rabbit as someone who withdraws rather than fights. That protects, but it can also mean that others have no idea what is bothering you.
Moon, morning and the cat
In Chinese folklore a rabbit lives on the moon and mixes an elixir there. That is why it is linked with gentleness, healing and a sense of beauty. Its fixed element is Wood and its polarity Yin, the quiet, receptive side. Its double hour is 05:00 to 06:59, when the light comes up and the day is still quiet.
One curiosity: in the Vietnamese zodiac the cat takes this place instead of the rabbit. The qualities attributed to both are similar: caution, elegance and a fine sense for their surroundings.
Work and home
At work, people born in a Rabbit year are often described as the ones everyone likes working with: attentive, polite, with an eye for details others miss. Loud competition and tough negotiations, on the other hand, take a lot out of them. With money there is often caution and a liking for beautiful things that last. Check whether you flourish more in calm teams than in rooms where the loudest voice wins.
Five kinds of Rabbit
Each element appears once in 60 years among the Rabbit years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.
| Element | Years | What tradition describes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Rabbit | 1975, 2035 | Wood Rabbits (1975, 2035) carry their element twice and may seem especially warm-hearted and accommodating. |
| Fire Rabbit | 1927, 1987 | Fire Rabbits (1927, 1987) often show more temper and are more likely to say what they think. |
| Earth Rabbit | 1939, 1999 | Earth Rabbits (1939, 1999) may combine sensitivity with more steadiness and a sense of security. |
| Metal Rabbit | 1951, 2011 | Tradition describes Metal Rabbits (1951, 2011) as clearer about their limits and less willing to accept everything. |
| Water Rabbit | 1963, 2023 | Water Rabbits (1963, 2023) often seem especially empathetic and soak up other people's moods. |
Who goes with the Rabbit?
For the Rabbit, tradition names three patterns. San He, the three animals that traditionally complement each other: Rabbit, Goat and Pig share a wish for harmony and a cosy home. Liu He, the secret friend, is the Dog, which gives the Rabbit protection and loyalty. Liu Chong, the clash, is the Rooster, whose direct, critical manner hits the Rabbit where it is most sensitive. How long is the Year of the Rabbit?
Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Rabbit begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1915, has 354 days, the longest, 2071, 384. 6 of the 17 Rabbit years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.
It starts at the earliest on 22 Jan 2023 and at the latest on 19 Feb 1939. Together, 8.45% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Rabbit, rank 9 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Water Rabbit was 2023, next time 2083.
In the Year of the Rabbit 2023, from 22 Jan 2023 to 9 Feb 2024, 726,644 children were born in Germany, 1,892 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 10. With 384 days it was a leap year and had about a month more births for that reason alone.
