Rooster: An Evening Animal?
In the Chinese zodiac, the Rooster is an evening animal, not a morning one. Its time is connected to the Metal element, which stands for order and clarity.
Read along
In the Chinese zodiac, the Rooster is an evening animal, not a morning one. Its special hours are from 5 to 7 pm. That's the time when the day is put in order. Think of someone checking at the end of the day that everything is in its place. This fits its element, Metal. Metal is about clarity and precision. Many people born in a Rooster year recognise this. See if this is true for you. Find out which animal you really are. Work it out for free at theastroacademy.com.
A morning animal in the evening
You'd expect the Rooster at sunrise. Its double hour, though, runs from 17:00 to 18:59 – the time when, traditionally, the hens go back into the coop and the day gets put in order. Its fixed element is Metal and its polarity is Yin, the inward, gathering side. In tradition Metal stands for clarity, measure and separating what matters from what doesn't.
That image – someone who counts at the end of the day whether everything is in its place – may suit the Rooster better than the loud crowing. Many people born in a Rooster year recognise themselves more in quiet checking than in the big entrance.
When is the Year of the Rooster?
The Year of the Rooster returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 13 Feb 2029 as the Earth Rooster.
| Year | Element | From | To |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1933 | Water · Yin | 26 Jan 1933 | 13 Feb 1934 |
| 1945 | Wood · Yin | 13 Feb 1945 | 1 Feb 1946 |
| 1957 | Fire · Yin | 31 Jan 1957 | 17 Feb 1958 |

Precision in small things
Tradition credits the Rooster with a sharp eye for detail. In daily life that can look very concrete. Do you know any of these scenes?
- In the group chat you're the only one who notices the date falls on a public holiday.
- The dishwasher gets quietly rearranged after your partner has loaded it.
- Before sending the email to your boss you read it three times, and on the third read you still cut a comma.
- You arrive five minutes early and wonder why the others don't.
When honesty cuts too deep
The Rooster is seen as direct. What others only think, it often says out loud – usually with good intent, because something should get better. The brother planning a new business doesn't get applause, he gets three questions about costs. That can help. It can also land as criticism when the other person needed encouragement first.
Then there is what tradition calls the Rooster's pride: the pleasure of being seen when you've done something well. Check for yourself: how do you feel when nobody notices your work? For many with this animal that is harder than open criticism.
Money, plans and duty
Many people born in a Rooster year keep a household budget, even if it's just a note on their phone. Tradition links the Rooster with diligence and with jobs where care counts: accounting, organising, crafts, anything with clear steps. The Rooster is often the person you ask when a tax return is due or a house move needs planning. The risk lies more in carrying too much alone, because doing it yourself seems quicker and more correct.
Five kinds of Rooster
Each element appears once in 60 years among the Rooster years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.
| Element | Years | What tradition describes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Rooster | 1945, 2005 | In the Wood Rooster (1945, 2005) precision may mix with more generosity – order that leaves room for others too. |
| Fire Rooster | 1957, 2017 | The Fire Rooster (1957, 2017) is traditionally described as especially visible; check whether you'd rather stand at the front than organise in the background. |
| Earth Rooster | 1969, 2029 | In the Earth Rooster (1969, 2029) the care may show more calmly and practically, less as criticism and more as reliability. |
| Metal Rooster | 1981, 2041 | The Metal Rooster (1981, 2041) meets its own fixed element, and many then feel their standards for themselves as doubly high. |
| Water Rooster | 1933, 1993 | In the Water Rooster (1933, 1993) clarity often turns softer and more diplomatic – the same critique, in kinder words. |
Who goes with the Rooster?
In tradition the Rooster forms a San He – the three animals that traditionally complement each other – with the Ox and the Snake. All three value reliability and well-considered steps, and many find such bonds calm and sturdy. The secret friend (Liu He, the quiet pair) is the Dragon, whose momentum the Rooster can bring into order. The opposite pole (Liu Chong, the clash) is the Rabbit: one prefers to say it plainly, the other prefers not to say it at all. This is lore, not a statement about whether you'll be happy with a particular person. Check for yourself: when did someone do you good precisely because they handle conflict differently from you?

How long is the Year of the Rooster?
Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Rooster begins 16 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1921, has 354 days, the longest, 2077, 384. 6 of the 16 Rooster years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.
It starts at the earliest on 22 Jan 1909 and at the latest on 19 Feb 2053. Together, 7.96% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Rooster, rank 11 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Fire Rooster was 2017, next time 2077.
In the Year of the Rooster 2017, from 28 Jan 2017 to 15 Feb 2018, 826,334 children were born in Germany, 2,152 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 3. With 384 days it was a leap year and had about a month more births for that reason alone.
