Your real zodiac animal
If you were born in January or February, your Chinese zodiac sign might be different from what you expect. That's because the Chinese New Year doesn't start on January 1st.
Read along
Born in January or February? Your Chinese zodiac animal might not be what you think. The Chinese calendar follows the Moon, so the New Year's date changes every year. Take the Dog. Tradition says its key themes are loyalty, fairness and being watchful. This often shows in small gestures. Like staying to help a friend move when you only meant to drop by. This is an invitation to notice your own quiet ways of being reliable. Check if that fits for you. Work out which animal you really are for free at theastroacademy.com.
Loyalty in small things
Loyalty sounds like grand vows. In tradition the Dog shows it more in small, repeated gestures. Many people born in a Dog year keep friendships for decades – not because they call all the time, but because they turn up when it counts. Maybe you know some of these scenes:
- You remember what operation your neighbour had and ask about it two weeks later.
- When someone gossips about an absent friend, it makes you uneasy straight away.
- On moving day you're at your brother's at eight, although you'd only planned to drop by.
When is the Year of the Dog?
The Year of the Dog returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 3 Feb 2030 as the Metal Dog.

The Dog as guardian
The Dog's fixed element is Earth and its polarity is Yang. Its double hour runs from 19:00 to 20:59 – the time when, in the old days, the gate was shut and the house was guarded for the night. That is where the image of the Dog as guardian comes from, keeping watch so the others can sleep easy. In tradition Earth stands for steadiness and reliability, Yang for the readiness to stand up for something out in the world.
When worry comes along
A guardian rarely sleeps deeply. So tradition also describes the Dog as someone who worries a lot – about the kids, the parents, what might go wrong. Before a trip, what happens if the train is cancelled has already been played through. That can protect. It can also mean good moments only half arrive.
Add to that a strong sense of justice. Many with this animal see the world fairly clearly in right and wrong. Check for yourself: is it hard for you to forgive someone who crossed a line – even after they apologised?
Fairness at work
At work, many people born in a Dog year are drawn to places where they can protect or help: care, counselling, law, voluntary work, teams that are meant to be fair. They're often the one in the meeting asking why the colleague who actually did the work wasn't mentioned. Traditionally they handle money with care – a cushion in the account rather than a big gamble. It sometimes gets hard when they fight for a company that doesn't return that loyalty.
Five kinds of Dog
Each element appears once in 60 years among the Dog years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.
| Element | Years | What tradition describes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Dog | 1934, 1994 | In the Wood Dog (1934, 1994) watchfulness may show more openly and curiously, with more trust in new people. |
| Fire Dog | 1946, 2006 | The Fire Dog (1946, 2006) is traditionally described as especially passionate in standing up for others – check where you forget yourself in it. |
| Earth Dog | 1958, 2018 | The Earth Dog (1958, 2018) meets its own fixed element, and many experience that as a very calm loyalty that is also hard to shift. |
| Metal Dog | 1970, 2030 | In the Metal Dog (1970, 2030) the sense of justice may sharpen further, with clear principles and little room in between. |
| Water Dog | 1982, 2042 | In the Water Dog (1982, 2042) care often shows more quietly and empathetically, as listening rather than protecting. |
Who goes with the Dog?
Tradition places the Dog in a San He – the three animals that traditionally complement each other – with the Tiger and the Horse. All three have a strong sense of honesty and commitment, and many find such bonds open and dependable. The secret friend (Liu He, the quiet pair) is the Rabbit, whose gentleness can bring the watchful Dog some rest. The opposite pole (Liu Chong, the clash) is the Dragon: one wants the grand thing, the other above all the right thing. This is lore, not a verdict on two real people. Check for yourself: with whom can you put your guard down, and how do you notice it?

How long is the Year of the Dog?
Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Dog begins 16 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1910, has 354 days, the longest, 2006, 385. 6 of the 16 Dog years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.
It starts at the earliest on 22 Jan 2042 and at the latest on 18 Feb 1958. Together, 7.97% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Dog, rank 10 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Earth Dog was 2018, next time 2078.
In the Year of the Dog 2018, from 16 Feb 2018 to 4 Feb 2019, 761,612 children were born in Germany, 2,151 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 4. Per day, the trend matters most: births in Germany were high from 2016 to 2021 and have fallen clearly since 2022.
