The Goat in the Chinese zodiac
The Goat is the eighth animal of the twelve, called the Sheep in some translations. Tradition links it with gentleness, beauty and the need for a safe place. The next Goat year, a Fire Goat, begins on 6 February 2027.

Goat or Sheep
The Chinese word for this animal, yáng, covers both goat and sheep. That is why some books say one and some the other. It is the same sign with the same years. In tradition it stands for an animal that lives in a herd, seeks and gives warmth, and prefers to graze somewhere familiar.
When is the Year of the Goat?
The Year of the Goat returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 6 Feb 2027 as the Fire Goat.

A home, that holds
Many people born in a Goat year say how much their surroundings matter. The right light in the living room, a blanket on the sofa, flowers on the table. From outside it can look like fuss. Often it is a way of calming down: when the room is right, the day tends to be too.
- In a hotel room you move the lamp before you unpack.
- When your mother sounds sad on the phone, you sense it after the first sentence.
- When two friends fall out, you call them both that evening.
- You take a long time choosing a gift, and it has to fit that exact person.
Where gentleness wears thin
The shadow side tradition gives the Goat is indecision and the worry of letting someone down. Feeling a lot makes it hard to say no. Your colleague asks if you could just take on one more thing, and the yes is out before you have thought. Check it yourself: how often do you say yes when you mean no?
At work the Goat often brings a feel for design, atmosphere and people. Many Goat-born people do well when they feel backed, and struggle more where competition is harsh. With money, some lean towards spending on beautiful things or on others rather than on saving.
Earth, Yin and the afternoon
The Goat's fixed element is Earth, its side Yin, the inward, receptive side. Together, Earth and Yin form a picture of care and footing in tradition. The Goat sits at the end of summer, in the transition period that belongs to Earth.
Its double hour is 1:00 to 2:59 p.m., the quiet time after lunch. Many know the early-afternoon dip. Tradition sees it more as an invitation to slow down. Perhaps you notice that your best conversations happen exactly then.
Five kinds of Goat
Each element appears once in 60 years among the Goat years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.
| Element | Years | What tradition describes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Goat | 1955, 2015 | Tradition describes the Wood Goat (1955, 2015) as especially generous and helpful — check whether you give more often than you ask. |
| Fire Goat | 1967, 2027 | In the Fire Goat (1967, 2027) the gentle Goat gains courage and expression; you may notice you show yourself more than the Goat image suggests. |
| Earth Goat | 1979, 2039 | The Earth Goat (1979, 2039) carries its own element twice and is seen as the most dependable form — does that fit your role in the family? |
| Metal Goat | 1931, 1991 | Metal Goats (1931, 1991) are seen as clearer in their boundaries and taste; check whether no comes easier to you than to other Goats. |
| Water Goat | 1943, 2003 | The Water Goat (1943, 2003) is often described as the most empathetic, sensing moods almost like weather — do you recognise that? |
Who goes with the Goat?
The Goat belongs to a San He — the three animals that traditionally complement each other — with the Rabbit and the Pig: three animals that value peace and closeness. Its Liu He, the “secret friend”, is the Horse, which brings momentum while the Goat gives it a home. Its Liu Chong, the opposite, is the Ox: the Goat follows feeling, the Ox follows duty. Tradition describes friction here, not impossibility. Check in your own relationships whether feeling and duty collide or hold each other up.

How long is the Year of the Goat?
Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Goat begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1907, has 354 days, the longest, 2099, 384. 6 of the 17 Goat years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.
It starts at the earliest on 21 Jan 2099 and at the latest on 19 Feb 2015. Together, 8.45% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Goat, rank 3 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Wood Goat was 2015, next time 2075.
In the Year of the Goat 2015, from 19 Feb 2015 to 7 Feb 2016, 721,251 children were born in Germany, 2,037 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 7. Per day, the trend matters most: births in Germany were high from 2016 to 2021 and have fallen clearly since 2022.
