The Tiger in the Chinese zodiac
The Tiger is the third animal of the cycle and is traditionally seen as the bravest. Many associate it with the first step others do not dare to take, and with a restlessness that rarely fades completely. Check which of the two sides you feel more often.

Your true animal
The Chinese New Year doesn't start on January 1st. This can be crucial if you were born in January or February. We explain how it works.
Read along
Born in January or February? Then you might not be a Tiger. Your Chinese animal doesn't follow our calendar. It follows the Lunar New Year. Many people from a Tiger year know that moment in a meeting. Everyone is quiet, and they speak up. That is one side: courage. The other is a restlessness that rarely fades. This is an invitation to check for yourself which of the two you feel more often. Find out if you were really born in a Tiger year for free at theastroacademy.com.
Courage first
Many people born in a Tiger year know the moment in a meeting when everyone goes quiet and they say the thing nobody wanted to say. Tradition describes the Tiger as a protector that stands in front of those who cannot defend themselves. Perhaps you remember stepping in on the school playground for someone you barely knew.
- Asking the question at the parents' evening that everyone else only whispers.
- Quitting a job before the next one is certain because it feels right.
- Calling the waiter back when the table next to you was treated rudely.
When is the Year of the Tiger?
The Year of the Tiger returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 19 Feb 2034 as the Wood Tiger.

The restlessness underneath
Courage needs movement, and the Tiger copes badly with standing still. A Sunday without a plan can feel tight. Often it starts something with great energy, and once the excitement fades it is already looking for the next challenge. Check whether you feel boredom more as a restlessness in your body than as a thought.
Tradition gives the Tiger the element Wood, growth that pushes upward, and the polarity Yang. Its double hour is 03:00 to 04:59, the hour before dawn, when tigers are said in folklore to hunt most actively.
When the Tiger leaps too soon
The shadow sits close to the courage: the Tiger sometimes decides before it has heard everything. A sharp sentence to a colleague that felt fair in the moment and too much the next day. Many people born in a Tiger year also describe finding criticism hard to take, especially from people they do not respect. Perhaps you know the feeling of being right and still losing the argument.
Work and family
At work the Tiger is often drawn to where something is at stake: new projects, responsibility, a team of its own. It likes working under its own flag and dislikes close supervision. In the family it is often the one who defends its siblings, even when they are long grown up. Check whether your role in your family is the protector, the rebel, or both.
Five kinds of Tiger
Each element appears once in 60 years among the Tiger years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.
| Element | Years | What tradition describes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Tiger | 1974, 2034 | Wood Tigers (1974, 2034) carry their element twice and may seem especially generous and full of plans. |
| Fire Tiger | 1926, 1986 | Tradition describes Fire Tigers (1926, 1986) as especially passionate, and often as especially impatient. |
| Earth Tiger | 1938, 1998 | Earth Tigers (1938, 1998) may combine courage with more groundedness and a sense of what is realistic. |
| Metal Tiger | 1950, 2010 | Metal Tigers (1950, 2010) often seem determined and unwilling to compromise once they have decided. |
| Water Tiger | 1962, 2022 | Water Tigers (1962, 2022) may show more feeling for others and pick their battles more carefully. |
Who goes with the Tiger?
For the Tiger, tradition knows three relationship patterns. San He, the three animals that traditionally complement each other: Tiger, Horse and Dog share an urge for freedom and fairness. Liu He, the secret friend, is the Pig, which gives the Tiger warmth without slowing it down. Liu Chong, the clash, is the Monkey: where the Tiger goes straight at things, the Monkey prefers an indirect route. These are pictures from tradition, not a verdict on your love life. Look at people you know and check whether the support or the friction makes you feel more alive.

How long is the Year of the Tiger?
Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Tiger begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1926, has 354 days, the longest, 2082, 384. 6 of the 17 Tiger years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.
It starts at the earliest on 23 Jan 1974 and at the latest on 19 Feb 2034. Together, 8.45% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Tiger, rank 7 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Water Tiger was 2022, next time 2082.
In the Year of the Tiger 2022, from 1 Feb 2022 to 21 Jan 2023, 719,145 children were born in Germany, 2,026 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 8. Per day, the trend matters most: births in Germany were high from 2016 to 2021 and have fallen clearly since 2022.
