The Snake in the Chinese zodiac

The Snake is the sixth animal of the twelve. Tradition describes it as quiet, precise and hard to read. Whether you recognise yourself often shows in what you leave unsaid in a conversation.

Born in January or February? You might not be a Snake after all. Your Chinese zodiac sign doesn't start on January 1st. The date changes every single year. Many people born in a Snake year watch first in new situations. At a party, they stand at the edge and quickly see who gets on with whom. See if this fits for you. Watch first, then move

Many people born in a Snake year say they watch first in new situations. At a party they stand at the edge for a while, and half an hour later they know who cannot stand whom. Others sometimes read that as cool. Often it is simply care: better once and right than three times halfway.

  • You read a message twice and answer the next morning.
  • At the parents' evening you notice the real question was never asked.
  • Your friend hears about your new job only once the contract is signed.

When is the Year of the Snake?

The Year of the Snake returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 15 Feb 2037 as the Fire Snake.

Fire under cool skin

The Snake's fixed element is Fire, paired with Yin, the inward-facing side. The picture looks contradictory at first: a lot of warmth and will, but well hidden. Tradition says the Snake burns quietly. Check it yourself: are there things that matter a great deal to you that hardly anyone knows about?

Its double hour is 9:00 to 10:59 a.m., the time when, in tradition, the sun warms the ground and snakes come out of hiding. Many Snake-born people describe late morning as their clearest time. You can test that in an ordinary week.

In daily life

Money, work and the long game

At work the Snake is often credited with a feel for strategy. It waits for the right moment and then says in one sentence what the meeting circled for an hour. With money, many Snake-born people lean cautious: they compare for a long time and then buy one good thing instead of five cheap ones.

In daily life

The shadow side

Watching a lot and showing little can tip into mistrust. Tradition describes in the Snake a tendency to keep a hurt for a long time without naming it. Your brother then notices something has shifted, but not what. Perhaps you know the moment of thinking: if he cannot see it himself, I will not tell him either.

A simple counter-test: once this week, say what bothers you earlier than usual and see what happens. Often the reaction is milder than the inner Snake expects.

Five elements

Five kinds of Snake

Each element appears once in 60 years among the Snake years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.

The five elements of the Snake
ElementYearsWhat tradition describes
Wood Snake1965, 2025The Wood Snake (1965, 2025) is often described as more curious and open — check whether you ask more than you wait.
Fire Snake1977, 2037In the Fire Snake (1977, 2037) its fixed Fire meets a Fire year; tradition reads that as more ambition, perhaps also less patience.
Earth Snake1929, 1989Earth Snakes (1929, 1989) are seen as the most grounded form, building safety rather than taking risks — does that fit your last big decisions?
Metal Snake1941, 2001The Metal Snake (1941, 2001) is often described as especially determined; you may notice how hard it is to drop a goal once set.
Water Snake1953, 2013Tradition describes Water Snakes (1953, 2013) as especially sensitive to moods — check whether you sense what is going on before anyone speaks.
Compatibility

Who goes with the Snake?

The Snake belongs to a San He — the three animals that traditionally complement each other — with the Ox and the Rooster: three animals that value care and planning. Its Liu He, the “secret friend”, is the Monkey, said to bring it lightness. Its Liu Chong, the opposite, is the Pig: the Snake holds back, the Pig puts everything on the table. Tradition sees friction there, not impossibility. Check in your own relationships whether openness and reserve clash or balance each other.

Statistics

How long is the Year of the Snake?

Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Snake begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1965, has 353 days, the longest, 2085, 384. 6 of the 17 Snake years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.

It starts at the earliest on 21 Jan 2061 and at the latest on 18 Feb 1977. Together, 8.45% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Snake, rank 8 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Wood Snake was 2025, next time 2085.

Birth counts for a whole Year of the Snake are not available yet: the Federal Statistical Office's daily data starts in 2014 and runs to the end of 2025. The last complete Snake year lies before that, and the latest one ends after the data does.

FAQ

Questions about the Year of the Snake

Which years are Snake years?
Snake years begin in 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025 and 2037. Because the Chinese year starts at Chinese New Year in late January or February, many people born in January or early February still belong to the Dragon.
Who is a good match for the Snake?
Traditionally, Ox and Rooster form a complementary triangle with the Snake, and the Monkey is its secret friend. The Pig sits opposite. Take these as questions for your own relationships, not as a verdict.
Is the Snake a negative sign in Chinese astrology?
No. Unlike many Western stories, Chinese tradition links the Snake with wisdom, calm and fine perception. It is sometimes called the “little dragon”. Its shadow side, holding back, is part of the picture, as with every animal.
