The Dragon in the Chinese zodiac

The Dragon is the fifth animal of the twelve, and the only one nobody has ever met in a forest. Tradition links it with rain, growth and the nerve to be seen. Whether that fits you is something you can check in very ordinary moments.

Born in January or February? Then your Chinese animal sign might be wrong. Your Chinese zodiac animal is determined by the year you were born in. But that year doesn't start on January 1st. It begins with the lunar new year, often in February. A legend says the Dragon could have won a great race. It stopped to bring rain to a village instead. This idea of strength that serves others is a picture of the Dragon sign. It's an invitation to be seen. See for yourself if this picture fits, and if you were truly born in a Dragon year. Why the Dragon came only fifth

A widely told version of the great race goes like this. The Jade Emperor called every animal to race across a wide river. The Dragon could have arrived first, since it flies. It stopped instead, because a village below was suffering drought, and it brought rain. Then it blew a small animal clinging to a log towards the shore. So it arrived fifth.

The story carries the picture tradition has of the Dragon: a lot of strength, often spent on others. And a streak of pride that does not need to win to feel large. Perhaps you know the move: you take the hard task in the team and barely mention afterwards how much work it was.

When is the Year of the Dragon?

The Year of the Dragon returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 28 Jan 2036 as the Fire Dragon.

How much room is enough

Many people born in a Dragon year say they fill a room quickly. Not necessarily loudly, more with a posture that says: I have this. Trust often grows from that, because others can lean on it. Pressure can grow too, because everyone expects you to set the direction again.

  • At family dinner, the question of where to go on holiday somehow always gets settled by you.
  • You say “I'll handle it” before anyone else has opened their mouth.
  • A small plan turns into a big project in your head within five minutes.
  • When your colleague hesitates, it quickly feels like standstill to you.

Where it rubs

The shadow side tradition gives the Dragon is impatience with anything small and slow. When you have big plans, it is easy to miss that your partner just wanted a quiet Sunday. Criticism can then land harder than it was meant. Check it yourself: when did you last let go of an idea because it was too much for someone else?

At work this often shows twice. Dragon-born people tend to take responsibility and attract projects. At the same time, handing work over is hard when your own picture of how it should look is very clear.

In daily life

Earth, Yang and the morning

In the Chinese system every animal has a fixed element. For the Dragon it is Earth, even though people tend to picture water or fire. Earth here stands for centre and footing: the Dragon gathers strength and passes it on as rain. Add Yang, the active, outward-facing side.

Each animal also rules a double hour of the day. The Dragon has 7:00 to 8:59 a.m., the hour when, in tradition, the morning mist rises. Are you already full of plans in the morning while others are still looking for coffee? That is a small check you can run yourself.

Five elements

Five kinds of Dragon

Each element appears once in 60 years among the Dragon years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.

The five elements of the Dragon
ElementYearsWhat tradition describes
Wood Dragon1964, 2024Wood Dragons (1964, 2024) often describe themselves as builders more than defenders — check whether you start new things more than you guard old ones.
Fire Dragon1976, 2036For the Fire Dragon (1976, 2036) tradition describes double warmth and double impatience; you may notice both on the same day.
Earth Dragon1928, 1988The Earth Dragon (1928, 1988) carries its own element twice, often read as a calmer, steadier form — does that fit you better than the loud Dragon image?
Metal Dragon1940, 2000Metal Dragons (1940, 2000) are traditionally seen as very clear in their judgements; check how fast you commit to a decision.
Water Dragon1952, 2012The Water Dragon (1952, 2012) is often described as the most flexible, persuading rather than pushing — you might recognise that in conversations.

Who goes with the Dragon?

Tradition places the Dragon in a San He — the three animals that traditionally complement each other: Rat, Dragon and Monkey. Its Liu He, the “secret friend”, is the Rooster, a pair said to support each other quietly. Its Liu Chong, the classic opposite, is the Dog: the Dragon wants to go high, the Dog asks whether it is fair. None of this is a verdict on a relationship, more a map of where friction might sit. Check it against your own people, and notice where it does not fit at all.

Statistics

How long is the Year of the Dragon?

Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Dragon begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1904, has 354 days, the longest, 2096, 384. 6 of the 17 Dragon years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.

It starts at the earliest on 23 Jan 1928 and at the latest on 19 Feb 2072. Together, 8.45% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Dragon, rank 5 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Wood Dragon was 2024, next time 2084.

In the Year of the Dragon 2024, from 10 Feb 2024 to 28 Jan 2025, 653,509 children were born in Germany, 1,846 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 11. Per day, the trend matters most: births in Germany were high from 2016 to 2021 and have fallen clearly since 2022.

FAQ

Questions about the Year of the Dragon

Which years are Dragon years?
Dragon years begin in 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024 and 2036. The Chinese year only starts at Chinese New Year in late January or February. If you were born in January or early February, you often still belong to the Rabbit, the animal before.
Who is a good match for the Dragon?
Traditionally, Rat and Monkey form a complementary triangle with the Dragon, and the Rooster is its secret friend. The Dog sits opposite. These are traditional patterns to check against real relationships, not a prediction.
Why is the Dragon an Earth animal?
In the Chinese calendar the animals are tied to the seasons. The Dragon sits at the end of spring, in the transition period that belongs to Earth. That is why its fixed element is Earth, even though pictures often show it with water and clouds.
