The Ox in the Chinese zodiac
The Ox is the second animal in the cycle. Tradition describes it as the one who keeps going long after others have stopped for a break. Whether that picture fits you shows less in big moments than on an ordinary Tuesday.

Ox or not?
Many people born in January or February don't know their correct Chinese zodiac sign. That's because the Chinese calendar's new year doesn't start on Jan 1. Find your true sign.
Read along
Born in January? Then you might not be an Ox at all. That's because the Chinese New Year doesn't start on January 1st. It follows the Moon. Many people born in an Ox year know this feeling. They don't work fast, they work thoroughly. Picture building a shelf. You read the manual first, then you start, and in the end it does not wobble. That supposed stubborn streak is often just your own steady pace. Check for yourself if this fits you. Find your Chinese animal sign in seconds at theastroacademy.com.
A pace of its own
Many people born in an Ox year know the line "Can you hurry up a bit". The Ox does not work fast, it works thoroughly. It reads the instructions before building the shelf, and in the end the shelf does not wobble. Perhaps you know this: taking longer to begin, and then not stopping halfway.
Tradition gives the Ox the element Earth and the polarity Yin, the quiet, inward-facing side. Its double hour runs from 01:00 to 02:59, deep in the night, when on a traditional farm the animals were already being tended.
When is the Year of the Ox?
The Year of the Ox returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 31 Jan 2033 as the Water Ox.

Reliable like clockwork
Many see in the Ox the person you call first when the move is on Saturday. It rarely says yes, but when it does, it is at the door at eight. Check how often you are the one carrying the boxes at the end while others are still choosing the playlist.
- Holding the family calendar in your head, including your sister's dentist appointment.
- Eating the same breakfast for years and feeling it as calm rather than boredom.
- Taking on the task nobody wants at work and getting it done without fuss.
When calm turns stubborn
The flip side of steadiness is well known: once the Ox has planted its feet, it does not like to move. A new system at the office, a spontaneous change of plan on holiday, and the mood drops. Often this is not defiance but a need to understand before going along. For the people around it, it can still feel like a wall.
On top of that, the Ox swallows irritation for a long time. Tradition says it forgets little. Perhaps you remember an argument from years ago as if it happened yesterday. The question is whether you ever said it out loud.
Work, money and home
With money the Ox is often cautious: saving rather than speculating, buying the tool that lasts twenty years. In the legend of the Great Race it came second because it carried the Rat, which fits the picture people have of it: it does the carrying, even when someone else gets the applause. At home it is the one who fixes the hallway light without being asked. Check whether you sometimes miss recognition but do not ask for it.
Five kinds of Ox
Each element appears once in 60 years among the Ox years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.
| Element | Years | What tradition describes |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Ox | 1925, 1985 | Wood Oxen (1925, 1985) may be more open to new things and more willing to take a detour. |
| Fire Ox | 1937, 1997 | Fire Oxen (1937, 1997) often show more passion and are quicker to say what bothers them. |
| Earth Ox | 1949, 2009 | Earth Oxen (1949, 2009) carry their element twice, and tradition sees in them a great deal of stamina and groundedness. |
| Metal Ox | 1961, 2021 | Metal Oxen (1961, 2021) may seem even more determined and hold on firmly to their principles. |
| Water Ox | 1973, 2033 | Water Oxen (1973, 2033) are often described as softer and more patient listeners. |
Who goes with the Ox?
For the Ox, tradition names three patterns. San He, the three animals that traditionally complement each other: Ox, Snake and Rooster share a sense of order and planning. Liu He, the secret friend, is the Rat, which brings movement into the Ox's quiet life. Liu Chong, the clash, is the Goat, which looks for softness and room to drift where the Ox looks for structure. None of this says whether a relationship will last. Look at your partner or your closest friend and see where you complement each other and where you rub.

How long is the Year of the Ox?
Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Ox begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1901, has 354 days, the longest, 1925, 385. 6 of the 17 Ox years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.
It starts at the earliest on 23 Jan 2069 and at the latest on 20 Feb 1985. Together, 8.45% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Ox, rank 6 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Metal Ox was 2021, next time 2081.
In the Year of the Ox 2021, from 12 Feb 2021 to 31 Jan 2022, 765,497 children were born in Germany, 2,162 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 2. Per day, the trend matters most: births in Germany were high from 2016 to 2021 and have fallen clearly since 2022.
