The Monkey in the Chinese zodiac

The Monkey is the ninth animal of the Chinese zodiac. Tradition describes it as quick, playful and inventive – someone who finds a side door for almost any problem. Here you can check which of that shows up in your own days.

Your real animal sign

The Chinese New Year isn't on January 1st. That means your animal sign might be different than you think, especially if your birthday is in Jan or Feb.

Born in January? Then you might not be a Monkey in the Chinese zodiac. The Chinese year doesn't begin on January 1st. It starts with the first New Moon of the year. But if you are a Monkey, you might recognise this quick-thinking style. The printer jams, and you've already sent the file to the copy shop from your phone. Many people with this sign find a clever shortcut for every problem. See if that's true for you. Find out which animal truly matches your birthday for free at theastroacademy.com.

How the Monkey solves problems

Many people born in a Monkey year don't see the obstacle first, they see the trick behind it. When the printer jams, the file is already on its way to the copy shop from their phone. Tradition links the Monkey with wit and a quick grasp of things. It often looks effortless, almost casual – which can irritate the people who work at it longer.

  • The manual stays in the box, and the shelf still ends up standing.
  • When two friends argue, you're the first to spot a compromise neither of them had thought of.
  • A dull wait turns into a small game – who can guess first where the man with the suitcase is heading.
Every year

When is the Year of the Monkey?

The Year of the Monkey returns every twelve years, each time with a different element. It never begins on 1 January but at Chinese New Year. The next one begins on 26 Jan 2028 as the Earth Monkey.

Where the wit becomes an escape

Tradition is just as clear about the other side: the Monkey gets bored fast. Projects that turn into routine after three weeks may stay half finished. And someone who talks well can also talk their way out of things that really need a plain yes or no.

Check for yourself: when did you last crack a joke at the moment a serious word was due? Many people with this animal only notice afterwards that the humour was a shield – and that the colleague or partner would have preferred an honest answer.

In daily life

Work, money and curiosity

At work, tradition places the Monkey where things move: negotiations, new ideas, tasks that look different every day. Many people born in a Monkey year are the first to try new software and the last to keep a spreadsheet tidy to the end. They often handle money cleverly as long as it stays a game – a good swap, a discount found by being sharp. Long-term saving can feel more like a chore. Maybe you know it: three small chances rather than one big plan.

In daily life

Metal, Yang and the afternoon

The Monkey's fixed element is Metal and its polarity is Yang – the outward, active side. Its double hour runs from 15:00 to 16:59, the time when the day still has strength but is already glancing at the evening. In tradition Metal stands for clarity and edge, Yang for movement. Together they paint a mind that cuts quickly and jumps on quickly. If you were born between 3 and 5 pm, you also carry the Monkey in your hour pillar – even if your birth year belongs to another animal.

Five elements

Five kinds of Monkey

Each element appears once in 60 years among the Monkey years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.

The five elements of the Monkey
ElementYearsWhat tradition describes
Wood Monkey1944, 2004In the Wood Monkey (1944, 2004) the curiosity may show more as a wish to build something with others rather than tinker alone.
Fire Monkey1956, 2016The Fire Monkey (1956, 2016) is traditionally described as especially lively – check whether your pace tends to carry others along or leave them behind.
Earth Monkey1968, 2028In the Earth Monkey (1968, 2028) the playfulness may feel more grounded, with more patience for things that pay off later.
Metal Monkey1980, 2040The Metal Monkey (1980, 2040) meets its own fixed element, and many experience that as a double edge – in thinking as much as in speech.
Water Monkey1932, 1992In the Water Monkey (1932, 1992) the wit often turns inward, as a quiet feel for moods that not everyone notices right away.
Compatibility

Who goes with the Monkey?

Tradition places the Monkey in a San He – the three animals that traditionally complement each other: Monkey, Rat and Dragon. All three like pace and ideas, and many find such bonds easy and lively. The secret friend (Liu He, the quiet pair) is the Snake, whose calm can catch the Monkey's restlessness. The opposite pole (Liu Chong, the clash) is the Tiger – two strong creatures who both like to set the direction. This is lore, not a verdict on a real relationship. Check for yourself: where do you rub, and where does exactly that friction turn into something good?

Statistics

How long is the Year of the Monkey?

Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Monkey begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 1920, has 354 days, the longest, 1944, 385. 6 of the 17 Monkey years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.

It starts at the earliest on 22 Jan 2004 and at the latest on 20 Feb 1920. Together, 8.45% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Monkey, rank 4 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Fire Monkey was 2016, next time 2076.

In the Year of the Monkey 2016, from 8 Feb 2016 to 27 Jan 2017, 770,733 children were born in Germany, 2,171 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 1. Per day, the trend matters most: births in Germany were high from 2016 to 2021 and have fallen clearly since 2022.

Which years are Years of the Monkey?
1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028 and 2040. The Chinese year only begins at Chinese New Year in late January or February. If you were born in January or early February, you often still belong to the previous animal, the Goat.

What does 2028 mean for people born in a Monkey year?
2028 is a Monkey year again, this time with the Earth element. Tradition calls your own animal year Ben Ming Nian – the year your animal comes back around. Many treat it as a moment to take stock. What comes of that is a question for you, not a forecast.
