The Horse in the Chinese zodiac

The Horse is the seventh animal of the twelve and rules the noon hour. Tradition links it with movement, freedom and warmth. 2026 is a Fire Horse year, running from 17 February 2026 to 5 February 2027.

Born in January or February? You might not be a Horse in the Chinese zodiac. The Chinese year doesn't start on 1 January. It follows the date of a New Moon. Picture yourself in a queue. You are already working out which other line is moving faster. Many people born in the year of the Horse know this restlessness. They often think best when in motion. This can be an invitation to trust your impulses rather than planning every single step. Find out if you are really a Horse. Work it out for free at theastroacademy.com.

When you need to get out

Many Horse-born people describe a feeling they know well: after three days in the same place, things get tight. Then they have to get out — a walk, a spontaneous drive to their sister's, a new café. Tradition sees the Horse as an animal that thinks in motion. Do you know the moment when your best idea comes while walking, not at the desk?

  • You say yes to a weekend plan before checking your calendar.
  • In the airport queue you have already worked out which line moves faster.
  • You start a project with a rush, and the last tenth feels like wading.

Noon, Fire and Yang

The Horse rules the double hour from 11:00 a.m. to 12:59 p.m., when the sun is at its highest. Its fixed element is Fire, its side Yang, facing outward. Tradition stacks three images of warmth and visibility here. Check it yourself: do you have more energy around midday than in the evening?

In the circle of twelve, the Horse sits exactly opposite the Rat, which rules midnight. Noon and midnight, heat and cool: that opposition also matters when tradition asks who fits whom.

What it costs to stay free

The shadow side tradition gives the Horse is restlessness. Someone always moving sometimes leaves things half done, or leaves people waiting a little long. Your father asks on the phone when you will finally visit, and you realise it has been months. Often it is not indifference, just too much new at once.

At work this is a strength and a trap at the same time. Horse-born people often bring pace and good mood to a team. Boring routine, forms, the third round of proofreading — momentum drops fast there. It might help to cut exactly those parts into short stretches.

The year of the Fire Horse

Fire Horse years are 1966 and 2026, because years ending in 6 are Fire years. Here the Horse's fixed Fire meets a Fire year. In Japan the Fire Horse long had a bad name, with an old belief that women born in it were too headstrong. That is a superstition, not part of the reading used here.

For everyone, not only Horses, tradition describes a Fire Horse year as a fast, open year in which a lot gets moving. Whether that matches your experience is something you can look back on at the end of the year.

Five elements

Five kinds of Horse

Each element appears once in 60 years among the Horse years. Tradition reads the element as a tint on the animal. Check for yourself which line fits you better.

The five elements of the Horse
ElementYearsWhat tradition describes
Wood Horse1954, 2014Tradition describes the Wood Horse (1954, 2014) as more sociable and cooperative — check whether you prefer heading out with a group rather than alone.
Fire Horse1966, 2026In the Fire Horse (1966, 2026) fixed Fire meets a Fire year; many read that as the Horse at its strongest and also its most impatient.
Earth Horse1978, 2038Earth Horses (1978, 2038) are seen as the steadiest Horses, more likely to finish a stretch — does that fit you?
Metal Horse1930, 1990The Metal Horse (1930, 1990) is often described as especially independent; you may notice how little you like being told which way to go.
Water Horse1942, 2002Water Horses (1942, 2002) are seen as nimble and adaptable — check how fast you change plans when the situation shifts.

Who goes with the Horse?

The Horse forms a San He — the three animals that traditionally complement each other — with the Tiger and the Dog: three animals tradition links with courage and honesty. Its Liu He, the “secret friend”, is the Goat, said to give it calm and a place to arrive. Its Liu Chong, the opposite, is the Rat: noon against midnight, spontaneity against planning. That does not mean a Horse and a Rat cannot work. It only means tradition expects differences that need talking about. Check against your own people where that holds.

Statistics

How long is the Year of the Horse?

Between 1900 and 2100 the Year of the Horse begins 17 times, once every twelve years. These years are not equally long, though: the shortest, 2002, has 354 days, the longest, 2074, 384. 7 of the 17 Horse years have a leap month. The reason: a Chinese year counts lunar months of 29.5 days each. Twelve of them are eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two to three years a thirteenth month is added.

It starts at the earliest on 21 Jan 1966 and at the latest on 17 Feb 2026. Together, 8.49% of all days in these 201 years belong to the Horse, rank 2 among the twelve animals. The same pairing of element and animal only returns every 60 years: the Fire Horse was 2026, next time 2086.

In the Year of the Horse 2014, from 31 Jan 2014 to 18 Feb 2015, 753,030 children were born in Germany, 1,961 a day on average. Among the 11 Chinese years the Federal Statistical Office has recorded completely, day by day, since 2014, that is rank 9. With 384 days it was a leap year and had about a month more births for that reason alone.
