Not every calculator needs the same details. Anything involving houses or the Ascendant depends on your exact birth time and place, because the horizon shifts every few minutes. The moon phase and lunar nodes move so slowly that the date is enough. The table shows where you can start if you don’t know your birth time.

Where the numbers come from
Every calculator on this page uses the same foundation: the Swiss Ephemeris, an astronomical database that professional astrology software also relies on. Your birth time is converted to universal time using the time zone and daylight-saving rule of your birthplace, and houses are divided using Placidus. Do I need my exact birth time?
For most tools, no — sun sign, moon phase and lunar nodes work with the date alone. For your Ascendant and exact house placements you do need your birth time, because they change over the course of a day.
