Calculating your Descendant: the point opposite
The Descendant is not a body in the sky but the western end of the horizon line: the point where a sign was setting in the minute you were born, while the Ascendant was rising in the east. The two always sit exactly 180 degrees apart. So calculating your Descendant really means calculating your rising sign and taking the sign opposite. An Aries Ascendant gives a Libra Descendant; Taurus rising gives a Scorpio Descendant. The Descendant is the cusp of the seventh house — traditionally committed partnerships, contracts and the people who sit across the table from you as equals.

Because the axis is locked, a sign stays on the Descendant exactly as long as its opposite sign takes to rise. In London that ranges from 50 min to 2 h 50 min — so a Aquarius Descendant is far more common there than a Libra one.
