The basics

What are the lunar nodes?

The lunar nodes aren’t planets but two opposite points: the spots where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s apparent path (the ecliptic). Eclipses happen exactly at these points. They form an axis through your chart — the North Node on one end, the South Node on the other.

South Node & North Node

The South Node shows what has felt familiar since birth: gifts and patterns you slip into effortlessly because they feel "like home". They’re your comfort zone — and for that reason what you’re here to grow beyond. The North Node sits exactly opposite and shows your direction of growth: qualities that feel unfamiliar but move you forward.

That’s why astrology often calls this the "karmic axis" or speaks of soul themes: not as fate, but as a compass. The North Node is an invitation, not a command — the direction it’s worth growing in this lifetime.

Lunar nodes by birth year: every sign change

The lunar nodes move backwards through the zodiac — from Aries to Pisces, then to Aquarius and so on. A full lap takes them about 18.6 years. By our calculation they stay in one sign for 18.6 months on average. That is why everyone born within roughly eighteen months shares the same nodal axis. Right now the North Node is in Aquarius and the South Node in Leo — until 6 Mar 2028.

How to read your nodal axis

  1. South Node first: What comes easily without ever practising? That is what you fall back on under pressure. More on the South Node calculator.
  2. Then the North Node: Which quality of the opposite sign feels unfamiliar — yet still draws you? Check for yourself whether that direction fits.
  3. Add the house: With your birth time, your birth chart shows which life area the axis falls in — explained in The 12 houses.
  4. Watch the eclipses: Eclipses always fall near the lunar nodes. The next dates are in the astrology calendar.

How do I calculate my lunar nodes?
Enter your birth date above — we compute where the lunar node axis sat that day and map the North and South Node each to a zodiac sign. Because the nodes move slowly (about 1° in 19 days) and sit the same worldwide, you need neither your birth time nor place.
