What are the Big Three?
When astrology fans talk about the “Big Three”, they mean three signs. Together they say far more about you than your star sign alone:
- Sun sign — your core self; worked out from your date of birth alone.
- Moon sign — your emotional life; also from your date of birth alone.
- Rising sign — how you land on others; needs your exact birth time and place.
Your Rising changes sign roughly every two hours — which is why our calculator asks for the date first and the time second. That way you get two of your three signs straight away, with no birth time at all.

Sun, Moon and rising compared
The three signs answer three different questions, and they need data of different precision. The Sun stays about 30 days in a sign — the date is almost always enough. The Moon changes every two and a half days or so, the rising sign roughly every two hours. That is why you may see your Sun and Moon straight away but your rising sign only once you add a time. Today, for example, the Sun is in Libra and the Moon in Capricorn — the rising sign depends on the place and the hour.
