Or still looking to others for directions? This time is an invitation to take the wheel and own your direction. Find out when your test is due. Work it out for free at theastroacademy.com.
What is a Saturn return?
Saturn is the slowest planet you can still see with the naked eye. It takes about 29.5 years for one lap through all twelve signs. When it stands on exactly the degree it held at your birth, that is your Saturn return. The first usually falls between 28 and 30, the second between 57 and 60, a third at around 88.
In astrology Saturn stands for structure, responsibility and limits, for what you build over the long run. The return is therefore read as a time of taking stock. In these months many notice what in their life really holds and what they mostly keep doing out of habit. That is not a verdict on you and not a prediction, more a question that gets louder during this time.
Why there are often three hits
Seen from Earth, Saturn appears to move backward for about four and a half months each year. If this retrograde loop falls on your birth degree, it crosses it three times: forward, backward and forward again. That is why the calculator shows one or three exact hits, plus the whole window in which Saturn stands less than 3° away.
- First return (about 28–30) — often the question which life you chose yourself and which one just happened to you.
- Second return (about 57–60) — often a look at what you still want to build or pass on in the decades ahead.
- Third return (about 86–89) — the look back at the whole, which not everyone lives to see.

The table shows in which calendar years the exact hits fall for each birth year, counted from 1 January to 31 December of that year. In 2026 it is mainly people born 1996–1998 (second return: 1966–1968), with Saturn currently in Aries. The calculator above shows your own day.

More in the calendar
The faster loop in the sky is Mercury retrograde, three to four times a year. Every date of the year is in the 2026 astrology calendar. Saturn moves backward a good third of the time, on 36.3% of all days between 1940 and 2020. How many people therefore carry it retrograde in their chart is in our study Retrograde planets at birth. Where Saturn sits in your whole chart is in your free birth chart.
At what age does the Saturn return come?
The first at 29.2 on average, at the earliest at 28.4, at the latest at 29.9. The second at 58.6. Calculated for 7,378 birthdays between 1900 and 2000, every fifth day.
For 61.8 % Saturn hits the birth position exactly once. For 38.2 % there are three hits, because Saturn turns retrograde in those very months, moves back and then passes over it a third time. The return then stretches over almost a year.

Saturn return FAQ
- When is my Saturn return?
- Saturn takes about 29.5 years for one lap of the zodiac. Your first return therefore usually falls between your 28th and 30th birthday, the second between 57 and 60. The exact days depend on where Saturn stood at your birth. The calculator above finds every exact hit from your birth date.
- How long does a Saturn return last?
- The exact hit is a single day; often there are three, because Saturn turns retrograde during that time. The phase is usually counted as the time Saturn stands less than 3° from its birth position. That is usually several months, often close to a year.
- Why is the Saturn return said to be hard?
- In astrology Saturn stands for structure, responsibility and limits. Many experience the time around 29 as a test: do the job, the relationship, the place I live still fit me? That is not fate but an invitation to take stock. What holds often grows firmer, what does not fit falls away more easily.
- What is the second Saturn return?
- About 59 years after birth Saturn stands on its birth position for the second time. Many link this period with the move into a new phase of life: wrapping up a career, passing on knowledge, sorting out what is still to come. A third return follows at around 88.
- Do I need my birth time?
- Not for the dates: Saturn moves only a few arc minutes in a day, so the birth date is enough. Birth time and birthplace add the house the return happens in, meaning the area of life.
- Who has their Saturn return in 2026?
- In 2026 mainly people born 1996–1998 have an exact hit of their first Saturn return, those born 1966–1968 their second. Who exactly depends on the birthday; the table below shows every birth year from 1960 to 2005.
- When do people born in 1996 have their Saturn return?
- People born in 1996 have the exact hits of their first Saturn return in 2025–2026, depending on the birthday. The second follows in 2054–2056.
