Seven cards for your obstacles
The first quarter moon is the push moment of the lunar cycle. What you planted as intention at the new moon starts becoming visible — and at the same time, what is in the way shows itself. This seven-card spread takes that moment seriously and lays out your obstacles: the expected and the unforeseen, what overcomes them, and what even strengthens them. It is the bravest moon spread, because it does not show the wish, it shows the path — with its stumbling stones.
How this spread surfaces your obstacles
The first-quarter spread is built as an obstacle diagnostic. Card 1 (The querent) shows you right now, in your current stance toward the goal. Cards 2, 3 and 4 form a triplet for the expected obstacles: card 2 is the obstacle itself, card 3 is what overcomes it, card 4 is what instead strengthens it — energy you are currently putting into the obstacle without noticing. Cards 5, 6 and 7 are the same triplet for the unforeseen obstacles — the ones not yet on your radar, but already announced by the moon. Together the seven cards form a map of your stumbling stones, clear and usable.
When this spread fits
The first-quarter spread fits when:
- you want to check progress at the first quarter
- you are working on a project and feeling friction
- you want to reconsider a decision mid-cycle
- you have obstacles you cannot yet clearly name
- you want to use the lunar cycle actively for self-direction
How to actually read the seven cards
Read the spread in two triplets, framed by card 1. Start with card 1 (The querent): how do you stand toward the goal right now? Active, impatient, tired, slowed? This card colours everything that follows. First triplet (cards 2, 3, 4 — expected obstacle): the obstacle you already know. Read the three cards as a story: the obstacle, the lever, the trap. The "strengthens" card (4) is the most interesting — it shows how you yourself unconsciously feed the obstacle. Second triplet (cards 5, 6, 7 — unforeseen obstacle): what you do not yet see. Read it as forewarning, not threat. If you already have a hunch what it could be, write it down — the lunar cycle will show you in the coming days whether you were right.
First quarter moon — frequently asked questions
- What do the seven positions mean exactly?
- Card 1 is your stance. Cards 2–4 cover the expected obstacle (obstacle, lever, trap). Cards 5–7 cover the unforeseen obstacle (obstacle, lever, trap). The same logic, twice, for the two kinds of obstacle.
- What is the "strengthens" card?
- It shows how you yourself feed the obstacle unconsciously. That is the most valuable info in the spread — only when you see what is keeping the obstacle alive can you let it go.
- When do I pull this spread?
- On the day of the first quarter, or up to two days before or after. The action energy of this quarter is exactly the moment obstacles become visible.
- How does this combine with the other moon spreads?
- It is the action part of the cycle. New moon sets the intention, first quarter shows the obstacles, full moon shows the harvest, last quarter shows the release. Four spreads per cycle give you a real moon practice.
