Three cards for your new moon

The new moon is the darkest point of the lunar cycle — and exactly that is why it is the starting point. When the sky is black, the world begins fresh. This three-card spread uses that moment to clarify your intention for the coming month: where you have been, where you stand, where you want to go. It is not a prediction, it is an intention-setting — and moon cycles become much stronger when you consciously start them with a clear question, instead of "something will probably happen".

What the new-moon spread is built for

The new-moon spread builds the classic three-step logic of intention setting. Card 1 (Where you want to be) shows the goal — where you want to land in this lunar cycle. Card 2 (Where you are) is your honest check-in right now, at the new moon. Card 3 (Where you have been) shows what lies behind — the previous cycle that is now closing. Three cards drawing a clear arc: from, toward, starting where. You best use it on the day of the new moon (or within 48 hours after), while the energy of beginnings is still young.

When this spread fits

The new-moon spread fits when:

  • you want to start the new moon cycle consciously
  • you want to set a clear intention, instead of just hoping
  • you are in a transition and need a new step
  • you are working with a moon ritual and want to add tarot
  • you are at the start of a project, relationship, or life phase

How to actually read the three cards

Read the cards in reverse position order — card 3 first (Where you have been), then card 2 (Where you are), card 1 last (Where you want to be). That way you build the story chronologically and make sure your goal does not come out of nowhere. Card 3 closes the last cycle — ask what changed from the last moon until now. Card 2 is your check-in, right now — where are you actually in your life, beyond the story you tell? Card 1 matters most — it does not show "what will happen", but "where do you want to be in 28 days". Read it as an invitation, not a promise. If you take it seriously and take the first step, the new cycle begins with direction rather than with drift.

New moon — frequently asked questions

When do I pull the new-moon spread?
On the day of the new moon itself, or within 48 hours after. In that window the starting energy is strongest. Later it becomes a normal three-card reading.
What if my "where you want to be" card is unclear?
Then that itself is the answer: you do not yet know. Use the coming cycle to find out — perhaps with a daily card every few days. At the next new moon you pull a clear one.
Do I need a ritual at the new moon?
Helpful but not required. A candle, a notebook, five minutes of stillness — enough that the reading does not get lost between two emails. More is decoration, less often also works.
How is this different from a weekly spread?
The weekly spread is for 7 days and reactive (how my week is going). The new-moon spread is for 28 days and intentional (where I want to go).
